Visit the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Display Fountain
The Mill River Park Fountain is a 9,000 sq. ft. water feature, which recirculates over 100,000 gallons of chlorinated water for its displays. It was our hope to have it open as an interactive fountain, but its use of chlorinated water means that it is regulated as a pool by the State Health Department. One of the requirements for a public pool is that it have showers for public use.
While the upcoming Discovery Center will be able to provide this infrastructure when it opens in 2021, Mill River Park does not have that capability at this time. In our conversations with the State they have asked us to post signage letting the public know that the fountain is not a splash pad.
We have seen the public’s enthusiasm for using the fountain as a splash pad and are investigating what steps can be made to let the public do so next summer. In addition, the Mill River Playground at the corner of Main St. & Tresser Blvd. will be renovated this fall. An on-demand splash pad using fresh water is planned as part of that space. While it won’t be available until next summer, its use of fresh water means that it will not be subject to the shower requirement.
