Bringing the playground into the future!
One of the most beloved features of the Park, the Mill River Park Playground was built in 2006 by 1500 volunteers over 5 days. Now, almost two decades later, it is time for an upgrade to make the playground safer and accessible for all to enjoy!
The old playground will begin to be taken down on June 10, 2024 to make way for this exciting new Park feature. The anticipated reopening will be sometime in Spring 2025.
In the meantime, you can visit the following parks in the area, 10 minutes from Mill River Park, to use their playgrounds.
• Carwin (65 Spruce St)
• Lione (325 Stillwater Ave)
• Scalzi (97 Bridge St)
• (outside of school hours) Hart Elementary (61 Adams Ave), which is up the Greenway North Trail
The New Playground
The design of the playground emphasizes natural features, blending seamlessly with the park’s lush landscape. It will include elements that encourage imaginative play and physical activity while maintaining an inclusive environment that caters to children of all abilities. Features such as accessible play structures, sensory-rich areas, and ample seating for caregivers ensure that everyone can enjoy the new space.
The new playground is the result of an extensive community engagement process, that included the feedback of over 1,000 students from local schools and numerous meetings with families, ensuring it reflects the needs and desires of Stamford families and children. This collaborative effort has culminated in a playground that not only meets the highest standards of safety and accessibility, but also captures the spirit and vibrancy of our community!
Key highlights of the playground include:
Natural Play Areas: Incorporating logs, boulders, and plantings to inspire creative and adventurous play.
Inclusive Equipment: Adaptive swings, wheelchair-accessible ramps, and sensory play zones designed for children of all abilities.
Community Spaces: Shaded seating areas and picnic spots for families to relax and engage with the park.
Safety and Accessibility: Meeting all modern safety standards with surfaces and equipment that are accessible and safe for children.
